결제 (結制)라고도 말함. 범어 (梵語) varsa의 번역으로, 범어의 원 뜻은 비 또는 우기 (雨期)라는 뜻. 그러나 안거 (安居)란 인도의 우기 (雨期)에 3개월간 실시되는 승단 (僧團)의 특수 연중행사를 말함. 석가모니 부처님께서도 성도 (成道)하신 다음해부터 입멸 (入滅)하실 때까지 이를 계속하셨고, 그 후에도 불교전승 (佛敎傳承)의 모든 나라에서 행하고 있음. 한국에서는 참선, 경전연구, 정진, 수행 등의 다양한 행사로 여름과 겨울 년 2회 행해지고 있다.
이 기간동안 스님들은 외출을 금하고 오로지 연구, 정진, 수행에 전염한다. 그리고 안거 (安居)의 첫날을 하안거 (夏安居)의 제도를 맺는다는 뜻으로 결하 (結夏) 또는 결제 (結制)라 말하고, 안거 (安居)를 완료하는 것을 과하 (過夏), 안거를 푸는 것을 해하 (解夏) 또는 해제 (解制)라 말함. 안거를 마친 후 에는 안거 중 스스로 죄를 범한 일이 있고 없는 것을 서로 묻는 작법 (作法), 곧 자자 (自恣)가 엄숙히 행해지는데, 이 자자 (自恣)를 행하는 날을 자자일 (自恣日)이라고 말한다.
그런데 비 또는 우기 (雨期)라는 범어 (梵語)의 원뜻을 안거 (安居)라 한문으로 번역한 것이 아주 특이하며, 영어로는 이를 조용한 곳에서 행하는 종교적 수련이라는 뜻의 "retreat," 또는 한자 안거 (安居)의 뜻을 살려 "sojourn"이라고도 번역함. 그러나 안거 (安居) 이외에 하행 (夏行), 하경 (夏經), 하단 (夏斷), 하룡 (夏龍), 하좌 (夏坐), 좌하 (坐夏), 백하( 白夏) 등 다양하게 번역하기도 하니, 보통 근기 (根氣)와 신심 (信心) 그리고 용맹심 아니고는 정말 공부하기가 쉽지 않다

Varsa (S), vassa (P), or meditation retreat: Lit. "peaceful dwelling or sojourn." Originally the rainy season of three months in India, from the 16th day of the 4th moon to the 15th day of the 7th moon, during which monks stay in their monasteries concentrating on Buddhist studies and meditation.
The retreat is an annual special event traditionally performed in India by the Sangha for three months during the rainy season in summer.
This practice was initiated by Sakyamuni Buddha upon Lord's attaining enlightenment, and continued until Lord's great extinction. After the Lord's passing, it has become an annual event in the every country where the Buddha's teaching has been transmitted. In Korea, the retreat is observed twice a year, summer and winter, for three months.
After the closing of the three-month hard study and training, monks observe another session of formality called pravarana or self-confession, asking each other with fellow practitioners whether one has violated any kind of sin during the retreat. One thing somewhat confusing is that the name of the retreat in Chinese rendering has more than half a dozen. To be exact, nine in all.
