범어 (梵語) duhkha의 번역. 전생의 악업에 의해 받는 온갖 신심 (身心)의 고통과 불만족. 그러나 현실적으로 볼 때 모든 괴로움이란 궁극적 진실이 아닌 허상에 대한 집착으로 인해 생긴다는 것도 알아야 한다. 그렇다면 고통으로부터의 벗어남은 곧 집착을 놓는 것. ‘나의 가르침은 오로지 고 (苦)와 고 (苦)의 소멸뿐이니라.’ 이것은 부처님의 말씀으로 출가의 근본 목적. 다른 것들은 이를 위한 그다음 이야기. 사성제 (四聖諦)와 삼고 (三苦), 사고 (四苦) 및 팔고 (八苦) 참조

Duhkha: Suffering, pain, distress, misery, or dissatisfaction: The primal cause of which is desire, the never exhausting craving mind. "One thing I teach, duhkha and the ending of duhkha," said the Buddha, which was the Lord Buddha's primal motive for his great renunciation. What is the main cause of suffering? It is the grasping mind; the grasping mind of the false view of things. Cf.
