The three gates or barriers of the Great Ch’an Master Gao-feng, the author of The Essence of Ch’an. The following passages about three gates appear at the end of the book:
1) The bright sun is hung in the great space and there is not a spot which it does not illuminate, and it is a wonder how a piece of cloud can block its brilliant light.
2) A shadow is always by its master, and it is a wonder why the master can not tread on his own shadow.
3) The whole world is in a great fire, and it is a wonder what samadhi or concentration of the mind could prevent one from falling into the fire. Cf. (Dosol Samgwan) Three gates or barriers of Tushita Heaven.
