중생의 근기에 부처님의 가르침을 받을만한 인연이 있는 것을 말함. 기 (機)는 근기, 또는 시기, 연 (緣)은 인연이라는 뜻으로 속된 표현으로 기회를 뜻함

Opportunity and affinity: The receptivity of opportunity, especially a fortunate chance of meeting the teaching of Buddha or attaining enlightenment. Gi means temperament, capability, or time, whereas yeon means an affinity, conditions, or circumstances.
