선불교에서 즐겨 쓰는 말로, 지혜가 열리어 도 道를 깨침을 말함. 부처님의 팔만사천법문도 따지고 보면 이 한마디를 증득하기 위한 것. 깨침이란 인연법에 의한 형상과 이름 또는 어떤 개념도 없는 우주의 실체인 진여와의 합일을 위한 그림자와 같은 현상의 타파라고 말할 수 있다.
그러나 깨침 또한 어떤 형체가 있는 것이 아니며 단지 마음의 작용, 즉 쓰임새를 말하는 것이나, 마음 또한 형체가 있는 것이 아니니, 일체의 형상을 떠나 머물음과 분별심을 여읜 무념의 경지가 곧 진정한 깨침. 양구 (良久) 참조

Bodhi, or spiritual awakening or enlightenment: The entire corpus of sutra is, in fact, an explanation of only this. Enlightenment is to penetrate the veils of all mutually interdependent created things in our search for union with that which is beyond all names, characteristics, qualities, appearances and concepts. Yet there is no form to be grasped. There is only the ever shifting function of the mind. Hence one should not be attached even to enlightenment. Even that is a kind of delusion and discrimination.
