교 (敎)와 선 (禪)을 말함. 다시 말해 문자로 나타낸 교 (敎)에 의한 불교와, 문자에 의하지 않고 마음으로 직접 부처님의 가르침을 깨달은 다음 이를 이심전심으로 전수하는 교 (敎) 밖의 법을 말함

Textual teaching and meditation: Two main doctrinal divisions of Buddhism from the standpoint of the Seon School. One is a school that has a doctrinal system based upon the sutra or Buddha's teaching. The other is a school depending on the inner experience of the Buddha and is directly transmitted from mind to mind without relying upon scripture.
