마음을 조용히 살피는 것. 그러나 이때 살핀다는 것은 단지 ‘본다’는 것이 아니라 본래 허공과 같이 넓고 끝없는 청정한 마음으로 공적 (空寂)한 경계 (境界)를 보는 것을 의미한다. 다시 말해 자타 (自他)와 범성 (凡聖) 그리고 염정 (染淨)의 분별이 없는 절대 평등의 마음으로 보는 것. 그러나 이와 같은 수선 (修禪)은 간화선 (看話禪)의 그것과는 확연히 구별됨을 알아야 한다

Watching, or observing the mind: However, "watching" does not simply mean gazing at something but watching the quietude and emptiness of things with a pure and immeasurable mind like that of empty space, without discriminating between this and that, saint and commoner, and defilement and purity. This is a meditation practice different from Ganhwa Seon, or "key phrase" meditation.
