화두
[話頭, Hwadu]
-
Whadu: What is hwadu (lit. "speech-head")? Hwa 話 is the "speech or spoken phrase" while du 頭, or "head" is that which precedes speech. In other words, it refers to "keyword, or phrase that is isolated for constant investigation throughout one's waking moments during meditation," i.e., turning inward to self-illumination with unremitting singularity.
It is also translated as a "critical phrase," a "true-word of no-word," a "sign post," a "Cyclopean doubt," a "single koan," or a "lash" demanding for an immediate answer, a technical term of Seon (Zen) dialogue, which cannot be solved by the intellect. In other words, the answer does not consist of words or intellection. Literally, hwadu refers to the source of a word before it is uttered, or the inexpressible ultimate truth of a "live phrase." It is a method or a device employed in Seon dialogue between the master and student to arouse a doubt about the "keyword" to shut off all possible avenues of rationalization to find our original face, or true self-nature, to unite with the universe, the Buddha-nature, or the true-suchness.
It is also a kind of nonsensical question to a student for which an immediate answer is demanded, yet one should not arouse a thought or rely on reasoning. It is commonly known as koan in Japan. The difference between koan and hwadu is that if koan represents the entire dialogue itself, hwadu consists of a key word or phrase. As mentioned above, the first syllable "hwa-" of hwadu 話頭 means phrase, and the second syllable "-du" or "head" is a particle in classical Chinese and has no specific meaning. Cf. (Mukjoseon) Silent illumination medi- tation and (Gongan) Koan.
