(704-787) A priest of Silla Dynasty of Korea. He went to China at the age of 16 in 720, and became the student of Jingang-zhi. At his Master's suggestion, he set out for the pilgrimage to India by sea and returned to Changan by land in 728. The record of his travels, the Pilgrimage to the Five States of India was found at the grotto of Dunhuang in 1908 by a Frenchman named Pelliot, an Oriental specialist. Hyecho entered Nirvana in the foreign land of China, never returning home. The following is a stanza from the celebrated work he wrote about his pilgrimage to India to obtain the holy Buddhist scriptures:
"You are lamenting about the long journey to the Western region (India), / Yet I am lamenting about the long journey to the Eastern region (returning to China). / The route is extremely rough with the snow-capped mountains. / The deep valley below is the haunt of bandits. / The birds are frightened by the sharp edges of mountain-tops, / When pilgrims are scared of passing the narrow path of the bridge. / I have never shed a tear in my life, / Yet I see a thousand streaks of tears falling down like torrents of rain."
