줄여서 반조 (返照)라고도 말하며, 선종( 禪宗)에서 즐겨 쓰는 말. 언어 문자에 의지하지 않고, ‘빛을 돌이켜 거꾸로 비춤.’ 곧 밖으로 향하는 마음을 안으로 돌이켜 내 심성 (心性)을 바로 비추어 보는 것. 다시 말해, 불법 (佛法)은 밖으로 내달으면서 이해하려고 하지 않고 안에서 찾아야 하며, 따라서 한 생각이 일어나면 곧 일어나는 곳을 돌이켜 살펴야 한다는 것

Introspection, or self-contemplation: Look within and perceive mind's true light. Lit. "return the light to reflect upon the thing it originally came from"--the mind, the self-nature, or the Buddha-nature.
It is the term favored by Seon or Zen Buddhism, which means seeing one's true nature, or the Buddha-nature by reflecting upon one's own pure mind without recourse to any word or thought, or without using anything outside of the mind. Its abbreviated form is banjo, reflection.
