주역 (周易)에 처음 나오는 말로, ‘어떤 것’이라는 뜻이나, 유식 (唯識)에서는 진공묘유 (眞空妙有), 곧 이름 붙일 수 없는 우주의 본체를 가리키는 것으로서, 유가 (儒家)에서는 태극 (太極)이라 하고, 도가 (道家)에서는 천하모 (天下母), 그리고 불가 (佛家)에서는 일물 (一物), 마음 또는 본래면목 (本來面目)이라고도 말하나, 말이란 달을 가리키는 손가락이라는 것을 알아야 한다. 따라서 서산대사는 이를 ○으로 표시했다

The One-thing: The essence or the ultimate reality of the universe which is beyond expression and name. Confucianism calls it taegeuk, or the Great Whole, Daoist calls it cheonhamo, or the Mother of the Universe, and Buddhism calls it the original-face, the wondrous being of true emptiness, or the One-thing with a circle for its symbol. But we must never forget that words are but the finger that points to the moon.
