화엄경의 핵심교리로 의상대사 (義湘大師)의 법성게 (法性偈)에 나오는 말. 하나 속에 일체가 들어있고, 일체 속에 하나가 들어있으며, 따라서 하나가 곧 일체요 일체가 곧 하나라는 뜻으로, 이것이 곧 우주의 실상인 동시에 진리. 그뿐만이 아니다. 영원한 우주적 인과의 법칙에 의하면, 하나의 돌이 유기물 (有機物)이 될 수 있으며, 또 유기물이 짐승과 인간 그리고 부처가 될 수도 있다는 사실이다

"All is in the One, and the One is in All; the One is All, and All is the One": The unity of all parts with the whole, and the wholeness in all parts; or the unity in diversity, and diversity in the unity. This is the ultimate aspects of the true reality of the universe. It is a passage from the Song of Dharma Nature by Uisang, which is the principal doctrine of the Flower Garland Sutra. However, we also must understand the truth that in the eternal cosmic cycle of causation, a stone may turn out to be a plant, an animal, a human or even a Buddha.
