유부 (有部)와 유식종 (唯識宗)에서는 무명을 상응무명 (相應無明)과 불공무명 (不共無明) 또는 독두무명 (獨頭無明)의 두 가지로 나눈다. 전자가 탐진치 (貪瞋癡) 등의 육근본번뇌 (六根本煩惱) 와 상응 (相應)하여 같이 일어나는 것이라면, 후자는 이런 것들과 상응하지 않고 독자적으로 일어나는 것을 말함

Two kinds of ignorance: Sativadins or the Existence School and the Mind-only School classifies ignorance into two categories of associative ignorance and non-associative or isolated ignorance. The former is the ignorance arising from simultaneous association of ignorance with six fundamental afflictions, while the latter is the ignorance arising independently without association of any kind.
