오교 (五敎)의 하나로 인천승 (人天乘)이라고도 말함. 부처님이 성도 (成道)하신 다음 처음에 가르치신 것으로, 오계 (五戒)와 중품 (中品)의 십선 (十善)을 행하면 인간으로 태어나고, 상품 (上品)의 십선 (十善)을 행하면 천상에 난다고 가르친 교법 (敎法). 이것은 불교의 깊은 이치라기보다는 불교에 들어오게 하기 위한 하나의 방편의 교설로, 종교적 해탈을 위한 것이 아닌 세속적인 가르침

Teachings of human and heavenly beings: One of the five teachings ogyo. After having attained enlightenment, Sakyamuni Buddha preached first that if one observes five basic precepts and perform ten intermediate good works, one would be reborn a human; and if one performs ten higher good deeds, one will be reborn in the heavenly realm. In the strict sense, it is not a discourse aimed at religious emancipation but an expedient moral code to bring sentient beings to a religious life.
