두 마디 또는 군말. 이것은 알음알이와 분별심을 가리키는 것으로, 미개구착 (未開口錯)과 같은 뜻. 진리란 본래 말이나 문자로 표현할 수 없다는 뜻. 이것을 달리 말하면, 일구 (一句)가 부처님이 깨달은 경지를 곧바로 가리킨 말없는 말이라면, 말이 입 밖으로 나오면 그것이 곧 이구 (二句), 곧 고작해야 설명을 위한 하나의 방편 밖에 되지 못한다. 이때 자 字는 조사( 助詞)로 별다른 뜻이 없다. 삼자구 (三句字)와 임제삼구 (臨濟三句 참조

The two phrases or words: Two phrases, words, or utterances mean corruption of truth which is beyond words and expressions. It is better to be silent and look into one's mind, the mindless mind, than arouse one's mind and discriminate things. All the words and conceptions are, in fact, discriminations, far from the ultimate truth which is beyond utterances and words. Cf.
