Lit. "Not a word was delivered." What it really means is that what the Buddha has attained is beyond expression of words and letters for sentient beings to understand, or a warning not to be a slave of even the words of the Buddha. What the Buddha preached all his life was the fingers pointing to the moon, not the moon itself, which is beyond expression.
