제 (帝)는 도리천 (忉利天)에 있는 제석천 (帝釋天)을 말하고, 망 (網)은 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 아름다운 보석으로 얽혀 서로를 비추어 주고 있는 그물. 따라서 제망 (帝網)을 보망 (寶網)이라고도 함. 이때 ‘보석’이란 이 우주 안에 살아 쉼 쉬고 있는 모든 존재, 곧 생명체를 뜻하며, 또 이 모든 소중한 존재가 하나가 되어 서로를 ‘비추어주고 있다’ 함은, 불교에서 말하는 연기론 (緣起論)과 상의상대 (相依相待), 곧 서로간의 의타 (依他)관계를 뜻하며, 의상대사 (義湘大師)는 법성게 (法性 偈)에서, ‘일중일체 다중일, 일미진중함시방 (一中一切 多中一) 일미진중 함시방 (一薇塵中 含十方)’이라 쉽게 말씀하셨다. 찰해 (刹海)는 바다와 육지라는 뜻으로, 넓은 바다처럼 깔려 있다는 뜻.
이를 좀 더 쉽게 이야기하면, 이 가없는 무한대한 우주는, 우리 몸 안에 있는 눈에 보이지 않는 수십억의 세포처럼, 아승지겁 (阿僧祗劫)의 살아 숨쉬고 있는 생명체로 구성되었다는 것이다. 이들 생명체는 하나의 작은 날 파리나, 한 알의 작은 모래 속에도 똑같이 들어 숨 쉬고 있으며, 또 이것을 다시 쉽게 이야기하면, 우리가 모두 익혀 아는 연기법을 뜻하며, 부처님께서 보리수나무 아래에서 깨치신 진리. 그리고 이것을 불교에서는 편의상 법성 (法性) 또는 불성 (佛性)이라 말함. 깨침, 행복, 전쟁 없는 세계와 인류평화? 그것은 바로 이 부처님의 진리를 우리 모두가 깨닫는 것. 화엄법계 (華嚴法界) 참조

Lord Indra's splendid net with countless brilliant jewels illuminating one another, which covers the whole universe: "The countless brilliant jewels" mean all the living life-force in the universe, and "illuminating one another" means they are all dependent upon one another, not separate entities. This is what we call, "That being present, this exists; and this being present, that exists. All in the One, and the One in all."
We can also explain this cosmic principle in terms of our body. Our body consists of a countless number of microscopic living cells, every tiny cell dependent on others. This is the miniature of Lord Indra's net, each tiny particle illuminating one another. This is our body, life, and the universe. In Buddhism, we call it the Dharma-dhatu, or Buddha-nature. Enlightenment, happiness, the world peace and happiness of human kind without war and strife? We must first think about the brotherhood of all mankind. Cf.
