전식
Jeonsik]
-
Evolving consciousness, or transforming consciousness: Six types of consciousness (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind) in addition to the seventh consciousness, or manas, intellectual function of consciousness, and the basis for all mental functioning and acts as controller of the first five bases of consciousness. These mental faculties are born from the storehouse consciousness in various forms and are always subject to shifting back and forth, upward or downward.
Hence the name of evolving or transformational consciousness, which is the basis of the six modes of existence (the human realm, the animal realm, the hell, the realm of the hungry ghosts, the realm of the jealous Gods, and Devas). However, as primal awakening, or the immaculate original nature of mind, it sometimes means the eighth consciousness, or the storehouse of consciousness, the container of consciousness, or a depository of all kinds of karma-seeds, good as well as evil, whereas it depends entirely on the master of the mind which way to turn, to Hell or to the Land of Utmost Bliss.
"Usually this term is understood to mean the transformed consciousness, i.e., the first seven consciousnesses, so designated because they are transformed from seeds held in the eighth consciousness." Cf. (Jonssik Deukji) Turning the deluded mind to wisdom and enlightenment.
