재능이 뛰어난 선승 (禪僧)을 말함. 당 (唐)과 송대 (宋代)의 선사 (禪師)들이 시문 (詩文)을 통해 선풍 (禪風)을 크게 선양했기 때문에 이렇게 부르게 됨

Literally "a writer": A refined or accomplished Seon master. This name derives from the fact that during the Tang and Sung dynasties, many Ch’an masters were well accomplished in literature by means of which they spread the Buddha-Dharma far and wide.
