좌선
Jwaseon]
-
Sitting in meditation, or simply "sitting meditation": Sitting cross-legged in quietude and in deep contemplation or absorption. It should be distinguished from mere contemplation for quietude or a peaceful mind, because true Seon meditation requires a sharp concentration of the mind on a certain object such as hwadu or koan. In other words, the mere physical act of sitting quietly is not true Seon meditation, which requires concentration of the mind. "
Let's see what the Sixth Patriarch Huineng says: "In our system of meditation, we neither dwell upon the mind nor upon purity. Nor do we approve of non-activity. As to dwelling upon the mind, the mind is primarily delusive; and when we realize that it is only a phantasm there is no need to dwell upon it." He then goes on to say: "What is sitting for meditation? To sit means to gain absolute freedom and to be mentally unperturbed in all outward circumstances, be they good or otherwise. To meditate means to realize inwardly the imperturbability of the essence of mind." Cf. (Chamseon) Meditation practice or discipline.
