이것은 설일체유부( 說一切有部)의 주장으로, 현상적으로는 일체가 무아이고 찰나적 생멸을 거듭하지만, 이들을 이루고 있는 이면의 본체적 다르마(Dharma)들, 곧 자성들은 영원하며 항상 실재한다는 것. 이것을 비판하고 나선 것이 제 이의 붓다라고 추앙받는 용수 (龍樹)의 연기설에 따른 공 (空)과 중관사상 (中觀思想)

The reality of self-nature: The doctrine that even though phenomenal thing have no self-nature, the Dharma that constitutes the things retains self entities and is everlasting, a kind of eternalism, which is refuted by Nagarjuna in terms of the doctrine of causality, emptiness and the Middle Path.
