마음
Ma-eum]

Mind: The mind has no substance or mark. It is an ungraspable stream of consciousness that has neither name nor form. It is a trace of something that can never present itself, or something that can never manifest itself as such in its phenomenon. If we look closely at our lives, we can see that all appearances and disappearances arise only in our own mind. In other words, the mind is empty like empty space, and does not retain one single thing, not even consciousness of emptiness. But the mind is also the center of the Universe.
Where there is a mind, there is appearing and disappearing. If there is no mind or thinking, then nothing ever appears or disappears. Nothing ever comes and goes, even birth and death, Heaven and Hell, outside of our mind. Figuratively, the mind is also called a key-less lock, a mud-ox, a wooden-horse, a mind-circle, a mind-seal, a mind-moon, a mind-jewel, a magic stone, etc.
However, we also must understand that the mind also represents the ungraspable ultimate reality of the universe, which is called the Buddha-nature, or true-suchness. What all these mean is that the mind, the ultimate reality of the universe, the Buddha-nature, and the Void are the same with different names, and cultivation of the mind is to realize this truth and to be with the ultimate reality of the universe and attain Nirvana. Otherwise all practices will be in vain.
