콧구멍이 없다는 뜻이니, 콧구멍은 근원, 본질, 본래면목 또는 선 (禪)의 진리를 상징함. 따라서 이는 진리란 형체가 없으며 말로 표현할 수도 없음을 가리킬 수도 있다. 그런데 재미있는 것은, 이는 마치 육조 (六祖) 혜능 (慧能) 선사가 우연히 어느 스님이 금강경의 한 구절을 외는 것을 듣고 문득 깨침을 얻었듯이, 이것은 경허선사(鏡虛禪師)가 지나가는 사람의 이 말을 듣고 홀연히 깨침을 얻은 기연 (機緣)이기도 함
No cavity in the nose: A nose with no cavity? It is a metaphor of the essence, the true nature, the original face, or the essence of meditation, which probably points to the ungraspable as well as inexpressiveness of the ultimate truth.
It was a fortunate occasion for the Great Master Gyeonheo (1849-1912) to hear this phrase by chance, which was uttered by a passersby, causing him to attain sudden enlightenment, just as Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, had attained sudden enlightenment by hearing the recitation of a passage of the Diamond Sutra by a strange monk at the store.
