삼시 (三時) 중의 마지막. 불법 (佛法)의 쇠락시대 (衰落時代). 말법이라 함은, 불법이 쇠퇴하여 교법 (敎法)만 있고 그것을 수행하거나 증오 (證俉)하는 자가 없게 되는 시대를 말함. 하나님께서 온 인류를 멸망시키겠다는 기독교에서 말하는 말세 (末世)와는 그 뜻이 전혀 다르다. 정 (正), 상 (像), 말 (末)의 삼시 (三時) 참조

The era of decline of the illustrious Doctrine: It is believed that Buddhism will spread through three time periods, and the era of decline of the illustrious doctrine is the last of these three periods. However, it should be distinguished from the Christian conception of "the end of the world," or doomsday.
