오종선
Ojongseon]
-
The five types of meditation classified by Ch’an Master Guifeng Zongmi:
1) The common people meditation: A type of meditation practiced for a rebirth in the heavenly realm in requital for their good conduct in the present life, or for better health and mental state without an ardent religious motivation.
2) The Outside-way meditation: The meditation that follows the teachings that are outside the Buddhist teaching. Cf. Six heretical teachers at the time of Sakyamuni Buddha and Yoga, which was their chief mode of meditation practice.
3) The Small-vehicle meditation: It is so called by Mahayana Buddhism, because it is directed only toward the attainment of one's own inner peace based on the doctrine of impermanence of all things and selflessness of all Dharmas.
4) The Great-vehicle meditation: It is the realization of emptiness of all things including self. Unlike the Small-vehicle, its ultimate objective is the deliverance of all beings by self realization and the actualization of the great Way.
5) The Patriarchal meditation: It is the supreme mode of meditation practice. Meditation itself is the form of awakening, or the realization of the Buddha-nature. not the method of awakening. Cf. (Mukjo Seon) Silent contemplation meditation.
