불변진여 (不變眞如), 수연불변 (隨緣不變) 또는 불변수연 (不變隨緣)이라고도 말함. 진여 (眞如), 곧 우주의 본체는 불변 (不變)이나, 마치 바다가 바람을 만나면 물결이 일어나는 것처럼, 진여 역시 인연을 만나면 삼라만상 (森羅萬象)을 내나, 물결이 바다의 성질을 잃지 않는 것처럼, 삼라만상 역시, 불변의 성품 (性品)인 진여 자체가 변한 것은 아니라는 것. 따라서 만법 (萬法)이 곧 진여 (眞如)요, 진여가 곧 만법이라는 것.
이것을 좀 더 쉽게 이야기 하면, 진여 (眞如)와 현상 (現象) 사이에 차별을 두지 않는 것을 수연진여라 말한다. 이 진리만 제대로 증득( 證得)할 수 있다면 불교 공부의 첫 관문은 통과한 셈. 어려울 것 없다. 이것도 모르고 참선을 한다면, 밥은 안 먹고 이슬만 먹고 건강을 유지하려는 것

Sequent conditions of true-suchness: True-suchness, the ultimate reality of the universe, is permanent, never changing. Yet when it encounters conditions, it transforms according to the conditions, as the sea transforms into waves when it encounters the wind. Yet there is no change in the essence of the sea itself. Thus the sea is the wave and the wave is the sea, two in the One, and the One in two. In other words, in the ultimate reality, as there is no difference between the sea and the wave, there is no difference between true-suchness and ever mutating phenomena in the universe.
