성문( 聲聞)과 연각 (緣覺)이 수다원 (預流)에서 시작하여 사다함 (一來)과 아나함 (不還)을 거쳐 아라한( 阿羅漢)에 이르는 네 단계를 말함. 이때 향 (向)은 출발점을 뜻하며, 과 (果)는 도달점을 뜻함

The four departures and arrivals or fruits: They are the four stages of Shravaka or the Sound-hearer, and Pratyekabuddha or the Solitary awakened one to attain their final goal of Arhat. The four stages are: the Stream-entrant, the Once-returner, the Never- returner, and Arhat.
