불교 천문학 (天文學)에서는 수미산 (須彌山)을 중심으로 하여 해, 달, 사대주 (四大洲), 육욕천 (六欲天), 범천 (梵天) 등을 합하여 한 세계 (世界)라 말하고, 이것을 천 배한 것을 소천세계 (小天世界), 소천세계를 천 배한 것을 중천세계 (中天世界), 중천세계를 천 배한 것을 대천세계 (大天世界)라 말함. 그러나 불교에서 말하는 삼천대천세계나 시방미진세계는 단순히 그 수가 무수히 많고 무한대하다는 것을 뜻하는 것으로 보기 보다는 연기적인 계층적 우주관으로 보는 것이 보다 타당하다는 과학적 이론도 있다

The infinitely great manifold cosmos of the Buddha realm: Lit. "the three-thousand-great-galaxies of worlds." One universe consists of the sun, the moon, four continents, six heavenly realms of desire, and the Brahma Heavens with Mount Sumeru in the center. This universe is called the minor universe. A thousand times this minor universe is called the intermediate universe. A thousand times the intermediate universe is called the infinitely great manifold cosmos of the Buddha realm. However, there is a scientific theory that the infinitely great manifold cosmos of the Buddha realm and infinitesimal world signify the interdependent cosmological stratum rather than a simple infinitude or infinitesimal realm of the cosmos.
