체대 (體大), 상대 (相大), 용대 (用大), 즉 만유 (萬有)의 본체(體)와 속성(相) 그리고 그 작용 (用)을 말함. 다시 말해 체대 (體大)란 모든 현상의 본체, 즉 진여본성 (眞如本性)의 자리를 말하며, 상대 (相大)란 그러한 진여본성이 갖추고 있는 속성 (屬性), 곧 지혜와 자비 등의 무량공덕을 말하며, 용대 (用大)란 그러한 속성이 실제 나타나 작용하는 자리이타 (自利利他)와 자비광명 (慈悲光明)을 말한 다. 이때 대 (大)란 절대 (絶大), 즉 움직일 수 없는 진리를 말함

The three great fundamentals: They are the essence or substance, mark or characteristic of true-suchness, and its function. The essence means everlasting true-suchness of Dharma, and mark or characteristic of true-suchness, and function means potentiality of true-suchness and manifestation of characteristic, which leads to the perfection of self for perfecting others and the illumination of Buddha's great compassion.
