신구의 (身口意)로 짓는 업. 삼보업 (三報業)이라고도 말함. 몸과 입과 마음의 세 가지에 의해 짓는 죄업의 총칭. 몸으로 짓는 신엄 (身業)은 살생, 투도 (偸盜), 사음 (邪淫)이 있고, 뜻으로 짓는 의업 (意業)에는 탐진치 (貪瞋痴)가 있으나, 구업 (口業)에는 망어 (妄語), 양설 (兩舌), 기어 (奇語), 악구 (惡口) 등 네 가지가 있다. 그러나 신구의 (身口意)의 삼업 (三業)이란 셋이 아닌 하나임을 알아야 한다. 즉 구업이 의업이요, 신업이 의업이기 때문이다.
그러나 그 기준에 따라 각기 다르게 나타난다. 다시 말해 받는 과보의 내용이 복인가 아니면 고통스러운가에 따라 다르고; 받는 과보의 시기가 현생인가, 내생인가, 아니면 그 다음 생인가에 따라 다르고; 행업의 내용이 선인가 악인가에 따라 다르고; 행업을 일으키는 심리 내용이 아첨인지, 진심 (嗔心)인지, 아니면 탐욕인지에 따라 다르게 나타난다. 그러나 또 한 가지 알아야 할 것은, 몸으로 짓는 업이나 입으로 짓는 업도 따지고 보면 모두 마음에서 비롯된다는 것)

The three karmas, or three doors of action: The karmic consequences of body, speech, and mind or thought. The karmic actions of body: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct; the karmic actions of speech: lying, false speech, alienating remarks, malicious talk; the karmic actions of thought: greed, anger, and ignorance. Yet, in a sense, they are all interrelated--the one in three, and three in the one.
However, karmic results differ according to the criteria whether karma is good or bad; whether it will be in the present life, next life, or after the next life; whether the motivation of the action was good or bad; or according to the psychological state of the mind of the action whether it was flattery, anger, or greed. However, in the strict sense, the karmic actions of body and speech also come from the mind.
