임제종지 (臨濟宗旨)의 삼구 (三句)를 말하는 것으로, 제 일구 (一句)는 몸이 죽고 목숨이 끊어지는 것이고, 제 이구 (二句)는 입을 열기도 전에 그르친 것이고, 제 삼구 (三句)는 똥 쓰레받기와 빗자루와 같다는 것으로 몽둥이감이라는 뜻. 어려운 말이며, 여기에 등장하는 것이 임제할( 臨濟喝)과 덕산봉 (德山棒)이다. 서산대사 (西山大師)의 선가귀감 (禪家龜鑑) 제 79장을 참조할 것

Three phrases: It is one of the famous doctrines of the Linji School. The first or primary phrase is a direct expression of mind beyond words and expression where lies the life and death of Seon meditation.
The second phrase is a mistake already committed even before opening the mouth, which means no truth can be put into words and phrases.
