임제종 (臨濟宗)엔 학인에게 깨달음을 얻게 하는데 네 가지 격식 (格式)이 있다
1) 올바른 방법을 일러주어 깨달음을 얻게 하는 격식으로, 달마대사가 소림굴에서 벽을 마주하고 있는 것과 같은 것.
2) 평상시의 도리로 깨달음을 얻게 하는 격식으로, 화산 (華山)스님이 북을 칠 줄 안다는 것과 같은 것.
3) 본분 (本分)으로 깨달음을 얻게 하는 격식으로, ‘산승은 알지 못 한다’는 것과 같은 것.
4) 방편으로 깨달음을 얻게 하는 것으로, 달마가 ‘알지 못 한다’고 말한 것과 같은 것.

The four ways of instruction of the Linji Order for the student to attain enlightenment:
1) The proper way to attain enlightenment, such as Bodhidharma's sitting in meditation facing the wall in the cave of a Saholin Monastery.
2) The ordinary way of attaining enlightenment, such as hitting a drum.
3) Attaining enlightenment by realization of the true self-nature by means of quizzical speech, such as "the priest does not know."
4) Attaining enlightenment by means of expediency, such as the comment of Bodhidharma, "I do not know."
