동서남북 사방을 수호하는 네 수호신. 좀 더 자세히 말하면:
1) 남쪽의 증장천왕 (增長天王)은 푸른 용 (龍)의 모습을 하고 있으며,
2) 무서운 모습을 한 흰색을 한 동쪽의 지국천왕 (持國天王)은 검 (劒)을,
3) 검은색을 한 북쪽의 다문천왕 (多聞天王)은 비파 (琵琶)를,
4) 붉은 색을 한 서쪽의 광목천왕 (廣目天王)은 탑 (塔)을 손에 들고 있다. 사천왕문( 四天王門) 참조)

The four maharajas, or the four fearful looking guardians of the heavenly king who guard the four quarters of heaven:
1) King Virudhaka, the guardian in the south in the form of a blue dragon.
2) King Dhrtarastra, the fearful aspect of the guardian in the east in white with a sword in his hand.
3) King Vaisravana, the guardian in the north in black with a lute in his hand.
