원만한 교법이라는 뜻. 모든 경전의 내용을 체계화하여 비판 분류하는 교상판석 (敎相判釋)의 가르침을 원교 (圓敎)라 한다. 그런가 하면 북위 (北魏)의 혜광 (慧光)은 이를 점 (漸), 동 (頓), 원 (圓)의 삼교 (三敎)로 나누어 화엄경을 원교 (圓敎)로 분류함

The perfect, unsurpassed, or comprehensive teaching: Its aim is to analyze the higher and lower quality of all doctrines. On the other hand, Huigang of Beiwei or North Wei classified all the teachings of Buddha into three categories: gradual, sudden, and perfect or unsurpassed, and then classified the perfect or unsurpassed teaching as the doctrine of the Flower Garland Sutra.
