원래는 모든 무지와 번뇌 그리고 고통을 여의고 깨닫는다는 뜻이었으나, 후에 승려의 죽음을 뜻하는 말이 되었다. 열반 또는 입적 (入寂)과 같은 뜻으로, 특히 고승의 죽음을 말함

Perfect rest, calm extinction, complete quiescence, or parinirvana: It, a Chinese transliteration of Nirvana, originally meant the perfection of all virtues and elimination of all evils, or release from all ignorance, defilement, and sufferings, but it is now understood as a death of a great priests.
