약사유리광여래 (藥師瑠璃光如來)의 약칭으로, ‘약왕 (藥王)’이라는 뜻. 동방 (東方) 극락에 계시며, 중생의 미혹한 불성을 치료하여 완성하시는 부처님. 왼손은 약병을 들고 오른손은 사무외인 (四無畏印)을 하고 계시다. 약사전 (藥師殿)에 모셔있음. 약사여래는 흔히 석가모니불과 아미타불과 함께 삼존불 (三尊佛)로 등장하며, 이 경우 약사여래는 석가모니의 왼편에 위치하고 아미타불은 오른편에 위치한다

Bhaisajyaraja: Lit. "King of Medicine," the Bodhisattva of Medicine or Healing Buddha who cures all diseases and lengthens life, or perfects the quality of Buddhahood of all living beings at the Hall of Medicine Buddha. He is the Buddha in the Pure Land of the Paradise of the East. He often appears on the left of Sakyamuni as a part of a triad with Sakyamuni and Amitabha. His right hand seal is the gesture of four fearlessnesses, or the dispelling-fear mudra, and he is always depicted holding a vessel of medicine in his left hand.
