사종선 (四種禪)의 하나로, 최상승선 (最上乘禪)이라고도 말하며, 역사적으로 달마 (達摩) (?-528)에서 육조 혜능 (638-713) 이전까지를 여래선이리라고 하고, 혜능 이후 대혜종고 (大慧宗杲) (1088-1163) 선사가 간화선을 세우는 1100년대 이전까지를 조사선이라고 함. 여래선이라는 말은 능가경에 있는 것으로, 규봉 (圭峰)은 이것으로써 교선일치 (敎禪一致)라 주장하여 달마가 전한 최상승선이라 하였으나, 여래선의 판별 (判別)은 오히려 문자의 알음알이인 이 (理)에 떨어져 달마가 전한 진선미 (眞禪味)에 도달하지 못해 깨달음에 대한 흔적이 아직 남아있는 이에 대하여 조사선이란 말이 생기게 되었다.
여래선은 당나라 (618-907) 이후에 조사선 (祖師禪)과 같이 쓰이기도 하였으나, 조사선은 석가의 마음을 마음으로 아는 선 (禪임)을 말하는데 대하여, 여래선은 부처님의 말씀인 경전 (經典)을 중요시 하면서 청정한 자신의 마음이 본래 부처와 다름이 없다는 이치를 깨달아 여래의 경지에 들어가는 선 (禪) 공부.
이렇듯 여래선은 여래가 설한 경전의 뜻을 중시해 그 뜻을 깨닫는 것을 중시하므로, 조사선과 간화선에서는 여래선을 의리선 (義理禪)이라고도 하는 반면, 조사선과 간화선은 불립문자 (不立文字) 교외별전 (敎外別傳), 직지인심, (直指人心), 견성성불 (見性成佛)이라고 해 경전 (經典), 곧 문자보다는 조사 (祖師)들의 말씀 (語錄)을 더 중요시 함. 따라서 조사선에서는 여래선을 가리켜 생각과 알음알이가 아주 끊어지지 않아, 말자취가 있고 이치의 길이 남아 있어 마치 물에 도장을 찍는 것 (印水)과 같다고 폄하함. 간화선 (看話禪)과 조사선 (祖師禪) 참조

Tathagata's (pristine) meditation: It is one of the four kinds of meditation. It is also called the supreme-vehicle meditation, and relies chiefly on the sutra or the teachings of Buddha with the firm belief that we are all inborn Buddhas without any defilement, while the Patriarchal and the ganwha meditations stress the direct transmission of the Buddha-dharma from mind to mind without relying on words and letters. The Patriarchal and ganhwa meditations degrade it claiming that it still retains the trace of words and reasoning, and say it is like stamping the seal in water or on the mud. Yet both Tathagata and Patriarchal meditations have been practiced side by side for some time after the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
It should also be remembered that the style of meditation practice before the time of Bodhidharma (?-528) to the Sixth Patriarch Huineng (638-713) is called the immaculate Taghagata meditation, and during the period from Bodhidharma to the Sixth Patriarch is called the Patriarchal meditation. On the other hand, hwadu or the word-head meditation was established by Dahui Zonggao (1088-1163) around the year 1100. Cf.
