Tathagataa-garbha의 번역. 여래장이란 모든 중생의 번뇌 가운데 덮여있는 본래 맑은 여래법신을 말함. 여래장은 번뇌 중에 있어도 번뇌에 더러워짐이 없고, 본래부터 절대 청정하여 영원히 변함이 없는 깨달음의 본성을 말함. 그리고 또 여래장이란 비유적으로 말해 의식을 저장하는 창고라 말할 수 있으며, 이는 서구 심리학에서 말하는 ‘집단 무의식’과 비슷하다. 사람들은 이로 부터 각자의 의식을 인출 (引出)해낸다. 그리고 이것이 온전히 개인의 의식 속에 흡수되면, 새로운 대아 (大我) 또는 진공 (眞空) (Plenum-Void)이 형성되는 동시에 이는 또 다시 불성 (佛性)과 하나가 된다.
그러나 이를 우리들이 짓는 업 (業)의 측면에서 보면, 과거의 원인에 의해서 이루어졌든 소화 (消化)되지 않은 업장 (業障)의 저장소라고 말할 수도 있다. 따라서 여래장이란 한 면으로는 우주적 차원의 현현 (顯現)인가 하면, 또 한 면으로는 개인적인 업 (業)의 결과인 장식 (藏識)이라는 양면성을 가진다고 말할 수 있다.
또 다른 불성의 측면에서 좀 더 쉽게 이야기 하면, 일체 중생의 타고난 불성 (佛性), 곧 누구나 부처가 될 수 있는 씨앗이 마음속에 있음을 말함. 따라서 중생들의 어리석음에 의해 우리의 불성을 가리고 있는 업식 (業識)이 제거되면 곧 생멸을 넘어서 성불한다고 말할 수 있음. 일체중생실유 불성 (一切衆生悉有佛性) 참조

Tathagatagarbha, embryo of the Tathagata, or the Buddha-nature inherent in all beings: It means the everlasting immaculate Dharma-body, which is covered by defilements even though it is never defiled by them. Metaphorically, it is also a storage- house or repository-consciousness. "It is akin to the unconscious of Western psychology, and is, so to speak, the impressional state of awareness from which the individual draws his personal consciousness, and which, when entirely drawn into consciousness, will make the new-born Self at one with the All-self or Plenum-Void which merges into Buddha-nature.
In terms of karma, it is the store-house of unexpended effects created by past causes. It is therefore two-faced, being the effect of cosmic manifestation and the cause of individual effects." It can also be described as a storage house, or repository of the Buddha-nature in oneself and in all beings. Hence if defilements in the Tathagatagarbha are removed, our original pure nature will be revealed, and attain enlightenment. Cf.
