방편 교설 (敎說)이 아닌, 진실한 이치를 분명하게 밝힌 부처님의 위없는 가르침. 원측 (圓測)에 의하면, 삼시교 (三時敎)에서의 첫째 가르침은 공 (空)을 숨기고 유 (有)를 설했고, 둘째 가르침 은 유 (有)를 숨기고 공 (空)을 설했으며, 셋째 가르침은 공과 유의 도리를 모두 완전히 드러내었으므로 요의 (了義)라고 한다고 한다. 그러나 중생을 구제하고자 하는 부처님의 근본 가르침에는 차이가 없다는 것

The distinct teachings of the ultimate meaning of Buddha- dharma: According to Venerable Weoncheuk (613-696), at the first of three periods of teaching, Buddha taught, for the sake of expediency, the reality of concealing the emptiness of reality; at the second period, Buddha taught emptiness concealing the reality of being; at the third period, Buddha taught both reality and emptiness for the consummation of his teaching. On the surface, they differ, but in essence, they are not different.
