그러나 이 경 (經)의 이름을 어떻게 부르면 좋으냐의 아난의 질문에 부처님께선 유마힐소설경 (維摩詰所設經) 또는 불가사의해탈법문 (不可思議解脫法門)이라고 부르라 말씀하시면서 잊지 않기를 당부하신다. 경 (經)의 내용은 유마거사 (維摩居士)가 신통력으로 병을 가장하여 문병 오는 사람들에게 대승 (大乘)을 설하는 내용으로, 특히 문수보살과의 문답이 유명함. 불교 경전 가운데 가장 잘 알려지고 드라마틱할 뿐만 아니라, 재가 (在家) 수행자도 출가 (出家) 수행자 못지않은 경지에 달할 수 있다는 것을 시사하는 것이 특징

The Vimalakirtinirdesha Sutra, or the Holy Teachings of Vimalakirti: When Ananda asked the Buddha how this sutra should be named, Buddha said, "Ananda, this exposition of the Dharma is called 'The Teaching of Vimalakirti,' or 'The Door of the Inconceivable Liberation.' Remember it thus."
This sutra is the record of an interesting dialogue between Vimalakirti and Manjusri Bodhisattva and other disciples regarding the under- standing of the One-Buddha Vehicle. The popularity of this sutra is, besides its many dramatic scenes and teachings, perhaps due to its implication of the equal, spiritual values of the lay and monastic life.
