유마거사는 병을 핑계 삼아 부처님의 10대 제자들의 문병을 받게 되는 데, 자기는 온 중생이 다 성불하기 전에는 성불하지 않겠다고 말한다. 부처님의 10대 제자들이 거사 앞에서 당혹스러워하는 것이 어느 면에선 참신해 보인다. 그리고 불이법 (不二法)에 대한 유마거사의 양구 (良久)는 너무나 유명하다

Householder Vimalakirti: He feigns illness to instruct great disciples of Sakyamuni Buddha, saying that his illness would not be healed unless all living beings are treated of their sickness; that is, until they attain enlightenment. The highlight of his great discourse seems to be his "noble silence" to the question of non-duality by Sariputra.
