유는 일반적으로 존재한다는 뜻으로 공 (空)과 무의 반대개념으로 생각하나, 원효대사는 연기론적인 차원에서 이를 좀 더 구체적으로 설명하고 있다. 즉 ‘인 (因)과 연 (緣)이 계합 (契合)한 것을 유 (有)라 한다. 현실적으로 있는 것을 유 (有)라고 하는 것이 아니다. 인 (因)과 연 (緣)이 흩어지므로 무 (無)라고 한다. 현실적으로 무 (無)가 있다고 하는 것이 아니다.’ 원효 스님답게 설명이 명쾌하고 빈틈이 없다

Existence and non-existence: Yu 有 is usually interpreted as "being or becoming" and mu 無 as "non-being, non-existence, or nothingness," but Venerable Wonhyo interprets them more to the point in view of dependent origination. "'Being or becoming' means it is arisen from a combination of causes and conditions, not that something called 'being' or 'becoming' actually exists; and 'non-being' or 'non- existence' means that the combination of causes and conditions is dissolved, not that there is something that is called 'non-being' or 'non-existence'" exists.
