Yunhoi Jeuk Yeolban]
-
Samsara itself is Nirvana: Nirvana and samsara are, for the enlightened, merely names of a pair of opposites. Only on the transcendental plane, beyond the domain of opposites, is truth realizable. Nothing is really acquired by attaining enlightenment. There are, in truth, no beings to liberate, for there are, in the ultimate sense, no beings. Therefore, the attaining of Buddhahood is, in fact, not attaining anything.
Thus, there is no fundamental difference between one who is and one who is not a Buddha. A Buddha knows, and the unenlightened does not know that he is a Buddha. That is all. Such rationalistic and scientific view of things, along with non-violence and meditation practice, must be an attractive side of Buddhism to the Westerners. Cf. (Beonnoi Jeuk Bori) Defilement itself is enlightenment, and (Saensa Jeuk Yeolban) Birth-death itself is Nirvana.
