유식 (唯識)과 같은 뜻으로, 우주의 궁극적 실체는 마음뿐이며 모든 현상은 모두 마음의 변현 (變顯)이라는 것. 또 이는 오직 정신만이 존재한다고 생각하는 유식 (唯識)과 화엄경의 중심사상 이기도 함. 모든 현상은 사실 거울에 비친 사물처럼 우리들 마음의 투사에 지나지 않다. 마음이 일어나면 만상이 일어나고, 마음이 가라앉으면 만상 역시 사라진다. 모든 것은 마음이 만들어낸 것. 그리고 우리의 존재라는 것도 사실은 우리들 생각의 영상( 影像)

Mind-only: The doctrine of the Consciousness-only School that everything is the projection of the mind. When the mind is disturbed, the multiplicity of things is produced, but when the mind is at rest, the multiplicity of things disappears. All is mind. All that we are is the speculation of our thoughts, made up of our thoughts. This is also the nucleus of the Flower Garland Sutra.
