열반
Yeolban]
-
"blown out, gone out, or put out," which means perfect tranquility, ultimate liberation from suffering, extinction of passion and karma in this life, not in the after life, "A state of supreme enlightenment beyond the conception of the intellect. Annihilation of all we know as the personal, separative self"--a cosmic mind.
Nirvana is a Sanskrit word which is originally translated as "perfect stillness" from the etymological meaning of the word, "extinguishing a fire," extinguishing the fire of greed and defilement. But it now has many other meanings, such as emancipation, eternal bliss, tranquil extinction, extinction of individual existence, no birth or death, no God, no Buddha, not even the idea of enlightenment or Nirvana; and the following is the interpretation of the term in the Middle Path by Nagarjuna: "Unvanquished, non-reached, unannihilated, non-eternal, non-ceased and non-arisen--this is called freedom [or Nirvana.]"
In the Hinayana it is believed to be attainable by turning away from the world of living beings and transcending all afflictions and selfishness through meditative trances. In the Mahayana, it is believed to be attainable only by the attainment of Buddhahood, the non-dual realization of the indivisibility of life and liberation, and the all powerful compassion that establishes all living beings simultaneously in their own liberations.
There are also four kinds of Nirvana, and for further explications of these, see each separate entry: 1) Jaseong Yeolban, Nirvana of pure and clear self-nature. 2) Yuyeo Yeolban, Nirvana with residue. 3) Muyeo Yeolban, Nirvana without residue. 4) Muju Yeolban, Nirvana of non-abiding.
