염불과 선 (禪)을 함께 수행하는 것을 말함. 학술적인 용어로는 선정상수 (禪淨雙修)라고 말함. 선 (禪)은 선정 (禪定)의 준말이고, 정 (淨)은 정토 (淨土)의 준말. 중국 선승 (禪僧) 영명연수 (永明延壽) (904-975) 선사 (禪師)에 의해 시작됨. 한국에서는 태안사 (泰安寺) 조실 (祖室) 청화 (淸華)스님이 염불선을 행하셨으며, 다섯 권의 훌륭한 법문집 (法門集)을 남기셨다. 그 중 '가장 행복한 공부'와 '마음의 고향: 純禪安心啄磨法門'은 문중 (門中)의 부탁으로 본 편자에 의해 2008년과 2009년에 각각 영문으로 출판됨

Chanting meditation: It is the practice of combination of chanting the name of Buddha and meditation to be reborn in the Pure Land, which was initiated by Ch’an Master Yongming Yanshou (904-975). In Korea, the Great Master Cheonghwa (1912-2003) at Taean Monastery was the great priest who practiced chanting meditation. There are two volumes of English translations of the Master's Dharma discourses by the compiler of this Dictionary: The Most Joyful Study (2008), and the Native Home of Our Mind: Dharma Talks for the Cultivation of Pure Seon for Peaceful Mind (2009).
