불보살 (佛菩薩)에게 예배할 때 손에 걸고, 또는 주문 (呪文)을 외울 때 수를 세는 데 사용하는 구술. 108개의 염주 알은 108 번뇌를 의미하며, 염주 한 알을 굴릴 때마다 번뇌가 끊어짐을 상징하므로, 일념으로 염주를 돌리면 부처님의 광명이 충만해지고 죄업이 소멸 된다는 의미를 갖는다
