인연에 의해 생성소멸 (生成消滅) 하므로 언잰가는 사라질 존재로 실체가 없는 일종의 환상적 현상. 진여 (眞如)의 반대. 예를 들면, 무지개란 어떤 조건과 장소 그리고 시간의 합작품일 뿐이다. 즉 수증기와 빛 그리고 나의 눈과 의식이 만들어낸 환영이라는 것.
그러나 이렇게 해서 조작된 무지개의 실체는 존재하지 않는다. 잠시 있다가 사라질 뿐. 즉 위와 같은 여러 가지 조건을 떠난 그 어떤 실체란 존재하지 않는다는 것. 이들의 결합 조건들이 다하면 사라질 이러한 현상을 ‘가합 假合’ 또는 ‘가상 (假相)’이라 말하며, 이들에 붙인 이름을 따라서 가명 (假名)이라 말한다. 우주의 모든 삼라만상도 모두 이와 같은 ‘가합’과 ‘가상’ 그리고 ‘가명’에 지나지 않는다. 연기법 참조

Unreal, unsubstantial, or illusory: Buddhism regards all forms having arisen from conditions such as phantoms and illusions that have no self-entity or everlasting substantiality. For example, a rainbow is just a combination of certain conditions which exist together at a certain place and time--water vapor, light, our eyes and consciousness. But the rainbow itself does not really exist. It does not have any existence independent of these conditions. So it is with everything else in the whole universe. Cf.
