부처님의 십대제자 (十大弟子) 중의 하나. 마하가섭 (摩訶伽葉)을 음역하여 대음광 (大飮光) 또는 대구씨 (大龜氏)라고도 말함. 두타행 제일 (頭陀行 第一). 교단 (敎團)의 상수제자 (上首弟子)로서 존경 을 받았으며, 부처님으로부터도 인정을 받았다

Kasyapa: One of the Buddha's ten major disciples, known as the foremost meditator in ascetic practice. As the venerable chief disciple, he became the head of the Order after Buddha's passing.
