천태종에서 수행의 계위 (階位)에 십지 (十地)를 세운 것으로, 삼승공십지 (三乘共十地)의 하나. 건혜 (乾慧)는 마른 지혜라는 뜻으로, 관 (觀)을 닦아 지혜는 있으나 아직도 완전한 진제 (眞諦)와 법성 (法性)의 이치를 깨닫지 못했음을 말함. 이러한 마른 지혜는 생사의 이치를 알았다 하더라도 실제는 생사에 자유자재하지 못하므로 진정한 깨침이나 지혜라 말할 수 없다

The ground or stage of dry wisdom: One of the common ten grounds of the threefold vehicles. This is the ground of rational wisdom of insight, not unsurpassed wisdom or enlightenment of the ultimate truth of reality, which is the emptiness of all phenomena, within and without. Such dry intellectual wisdom is far from true emancipation from birth and death and complete enlightenment.
